Traktor Pro: guide to decks, Remix Decks, FX Units and Sync Master Clock

Traktor Pro (developed by Native Instruments) is the DJ software platform favoured by forward-looking electronic music artists, live acts and modular DJs because of its audio-routing flexibility, effects processor and precision in time synchronisation.

1. Deck architecture in Traktor

Traktor allows up to 4 independent decks with 4 operating types:

  1. Track Deck: a conventional player with a spectral waveform display (Spectrum Waveform).
  2. Remix Deck: a grid of 64 samples (4 columns x 16 slots) for triggering loops and samples on the fly.
  3. Stem Deck: native multichannel playback of the .stem.mp4 format (4 independent audio tracks).
  4. Live Input: an external audio input that can be processed live through Traktor’s filters and FX.

2. FX Unit routing and processing

Traktor’s effects are widely recognised for their analogue sound and versatility.

The Master Clock ensures that all Remix Deck loops and effects with time divisions (Delay, gated Reverb and Gater) remain perfectly synchronised.

Enabling Ableton Link connects Traktor to the real-time synchronisation network, allowing additional laptops with Ableton Live or hardware synthesisers to be connected without traditional MIDI cables.

Frequently asked questions

What distinguishes a Track Deck from a Remix Deck in Traktor Pro?

A Track Deck plays a complete conventional stereo audio file. A Remix Deck is divided into 4 columns of 16 slots to trigger loops, one-shots and percussive elements synchronised to the master tempo.

How do FX Units work in Traktor?

Traktor has up to 4 independent effects processors that can be configured in Group mode (up to 3 effects chained in series per unit) or Single mode (deep control of one advanced effect).

What is Traktor's Master Clock, and how does it relate to Ableton Link?

Master Clock is the central digital clock that sets the reference BPM for all decks and effects. Ableton Link allows wireless synchronisation over a local network with Ableton Live or other software.
