Rekordbox: Technical Analysis of BPM, Key, Waveform, Phrases and Beatgrid Correction
Rekordbox’s analysis engine examines the digital structure of audio files to extract key information: tempo (BPM), harmonic key (Key), the waveform (Waveform), metrical divisions (Beatgrid) and structural sections (Phrase Analysis).
1. Analysis Engines: BPM, Key and Waveform
When you import a track, Rekordbox generates three fundamental layers of data:
- Tempo Detection (BPM):
- Identifies transient peaks in low frequencies: the kick and snare pattern.
- BPM range: Select the most suitable range in Preferences, for example
90-180 BPM, to prevent drum & bass tracks at 170 BPM being detected at 85 BPM.
- Key Detection (Key):
- Maps harmonic content to classical notation, for example
AmorF#m, or Camelot / Alphanumeric notation, such as8Aand11B. - Shows a colour code on the display to make harmonic mixing easier.
- Maps harmonic content to classical notation, for example
- Waveform Generation (Waveform):
- Full Color: Shows overall energy density.
- 3-Band RGB: Separates low frequencies (brown/red), mids (green) and highs (blue). This is the recommended view for identifying drops, introductions and instrumentation changes.
2. Normal Analysis vs. Dynamic Analysis (Variable Tempo)
| Feature | Normal Analysis | Dynamic Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| Music type | Techno, House, EDM, digitally produced Pop | 1970s Funk, Rock, Salsa, vinyl rips |
| Grid structure | Strictly uniform intervals between beats | Intervals vary from beat to beat |
| Behaviour on CDJ | Consistently precise synchronisation | Allows Sync with music played by a human drummer |
| Processing load | Low | High |
3. Step-by-Step Guide: Manual Beatgrid Correction
When Rekordbox places the first beat incorrectly or misaligns the grid in complex passages:
[ Uncorrected track ] ---> [ Open Grid tab ] ---> [ Set 1st Beat ] ---> [ Shift Grid Left/Right ] ---> [ Lock Grid ]
- Load the track into the Deck in Export or Performance Mode and press the Grid tab.
- Find the first kick in the track: the Downbeat / Bar 1, Beat 1.
- Click the Set Grid Beat 1 (M) icon to align the main red bar with the exact start of the transient.
- Check the adjustment throughout the track:
- Jump to minute 3 or 4 of the track.
- If the grid progressively advances or falls behind the kick peaks, use Shrink/Expand Grid to correct the decimal BPM value, for example changing 124.00 to 124.02 BPM.
- Safety lock (Lock Grid): Click the padlock icon to prevent an accidental reanalysis overwriting your manual corrections.
4. Phrase Analysis and Rekordbox Lighting
Rekordbox automatically detects the track’s structural architecture by dividing it into musical phrases:
- Intro / Outro: Opening and closing sections ideal for mixing.
- Verse / Chorus: Verses and choruses in vocal tracks.
- Up / Down / Build Up / Drop: Changes in energy intensity.
This information helps you visualise the track in the upper panel and also acts as an automatic trigger for the Rekordbox Lighting (RB-DMX1) module, synchronising moving heads and LED PAR fixtures to the exact timing of the Drop or Verse.
5. Reanalysing Files Without Losing Previous Work
If you update your Rekordbox version and want to benefit from improvements to the harmonic detection engine without losing your preparation:
- Select the tracks in the collection.
- Right-click and choose Analyze Track.
- In the pop-up window, uncheck the Cues / Loops option.
- Make sure only Key or BPM is checked. Rekordbox will update the metadata while keeping all your Hot Cues, Memory Cues and comments intact.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Normal and Dynamic BPM analysis in Rekordbox?
Normal analysis assumes a perfectly constant tempo, typical of electronic music produced in a DAW. Dynamic analysis detects tempo variations bar by bar, adapting beatgrid lines to human drumming or irregular vinyl recordings.
Can I reanalyse BPM or key without deleting my Hot Cues and Memory Cues?
Yes. In Rekordbox, uncheck the 'Cues/Loops' boxes in the reanalysis dialogue to update only the tempo map or stored key.
