Rekordbox Performance Mode: Pad Modes, Stems, Beat FX, Ableton Link and Recording
Performance mode transforms Rekordbox into a complete live-DJ workstation on a laptop or with DDJ / FLX-series controllers. It integrates control of up to 4 Decks, Sampler sequencing, real-time Stem isolation and synchronised communication through Ableton Link.
1. Advanced Pad Modes
The controller’s Performance Pads let you switch between different hands-on performance modes:
- Hot Cue: Triggers up to 16 saved starting points.
- Pad FX 1 / Pad FX 2: Combined multitouch effect chains, such as Echo 1/2 + High Pass Filter while holding a pad.
- Beat Jump: Instant movement through a track in quantised intervals of 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 bars without losing metrical synchronisation.
- Beat Loop / Slip Loop: Generates loops on the fly. In Slip mode, the song continues silent playback in the background while the loop is active.
- Key Shift / Keyboard Mode: Transposes the selected Hot Cue’s key across the 8 pads to play melodies on a chromatic scale.
- Track Separation (Stems Mode): Maps pads to instantly mute or isolate Vocal, Drums and Inst.
2. Real-Time Track Separation (Stems)
Rekordbox’s Stems engine analyses the audio signal with neural networks, separating the track into three independent elements:
[ Original Song ] ---> [ Stems Separator ] ---> [ Vocal ] (Mute / Solo / FX)
---> [ Drums ] (Mute / Solo / FX)
---> [ Inst ] (Mute / Solo / FX)
Practical Mixing Applications:
- Instant acapella isolation: Keep only Vocal active during a transition to place the voice over another deck’s backing.
- Clean bass transitions: Mute Drums on Deck A while introducing Deck B’s drums, avoiding low-frequency phase cancellation without moving the main EQ controls.
- Dedicated effect routing (Stems FX): Assign Reverb or Delay exclusively to the vocal track without affecting the kick or synthesiser.
3. Effect Processors: Beat FX and Sound Color FX (CFX)
- Beat FX: Effects time-quantised to the selected deck’s BPM—Delay, Echo, Reverb, Flanger, Pitch, Roll, Mobius.
- Depth / Mix Knob: Controls the blend between dry and processed wet signals.
- Beat Selector: Determines the time subdivision, such as
1/2 Beatfor a dub echo or3/4 Beatfor a polynomial delay.
- Sound Color FX (CFX): Channel filters and processors activated through an individual rotary knob—Filter, Jet, Crush, Noise, Pitch, Dub Echo.
4. Ableton Link Synchronisation
Ableton Link is a low-latency IP networking technology that synchronises tempo and bar position, Beat Alignment, across multiple applications and devices connected to the same local network, Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Rekordbox Setup:
- Connect your computer to the same local network as the machine running Ableton Live, Traktor or iOS/Android instruments.
- Click LINK in the upper-left corner of Rekordbox’s interface.
- Rekordbox’s Master Deck tempo automatically locks to the global tempo shared by the Link network.
5. Direct Recording (Master Recording)
Rekordbox can record sessions directly in uncompressed WAV / FLAC quality from the control panel:
- Open REC at the top centre of Performance Mode.
- Input selection:
- For integrated controllers (DDJ-400 / DDJ-FLX6 / DDJ-1000): Select
Master Out. - For external mixers (DJM-900NXS2 / DJM-A9): Assign the USB
REC OUTchannel in the driver utilities and select it in Rekordbox’s dropdown.
- For integrated controllers (DDJ-400 / DDJ-FLX6 / DDJ-1000): Select
- Adjust recording gain to keep the signal in the green/yellow zone, with a maximum peak of
-3 dBFS, avoiding digital clipping. - Click REC to start and end the session. The file is automatically saved in the library’s recordings folder.
6. DVS (Digital Vinyl System) in Rekordbox
DVS mode controls virtual decks from a turntable or CDJ/XDJ playing a control tone. The technique’s general operation—timecode signal, scope calibration and ground hum—is covered in DJ DVS and Timecode Systems; this section only covers Rekordbox-specific details.
Requirements and Activation
- A subscription plan with DVS enabled—Professional, Creative or Core; in older versions, the rekordbox dvs Plus Pack.
- In Performance mode, open
Preferences > DVSand select Enable DVS Function: this switches each deck into DVS mode. - In
Preferences > Audio > Input/Output, route the inputs: Turntables (Control tone PHONO), CDJs (Control tone CD/LINE), or Custom if combining both. On the mixer, the channel input selector must point to USB. - Control medium: AlphaTheta RB-VS1-K vinyl or the
rekordbox Control Signal.wavfile burned to CD-R or copied to USB for CDJ/XDJ. Rekordbox does not support other manufacturers’ vinyl, CDs or signal files: the disc marker and cue point would stop matching. - Calibration: start in AUTO; if scratching is unstable, switch to MANUAL and adjust L/R Balance and P/A Balance until the ring looks nearly circular, then raise the noise threshold, Noise Level, until the ring stays closed with the motor stopped.
Per-Deck Modes and Their Limits
- ABSOLUTE: the needle governs digital position; digital functions such as Hot Cue and Needle Search are restricted.
- RELATIVE: the needle governs direction, tempo and scratching, not position; SYNC only synchronises BPM, not the BeatGrid.
- INTERNAL: the turntable stops controlling the deck, which regains all its functions; this is the rescue mode if the signal drops.
- THROUGH (standalone interfaces only): passes turntable audio through unprocessed.
Typical Symptoms and Adjustments
- Deformed ring or loose points: dirt on the cartridge, channel-gain imbalance or a faulty RCA cable.
- Tempo offset with the fader centred in RELATIVE: press RESET on the platter or switch to INTERNAL with the fader at ±0 %, then return to RELATIVE.
- Audience bass vibrations: raise the noise threshold before cartridge volume.
- Sluggish response: a 128-sample buffer for scratching and 256 samples for stable mixing on tuned machines.

Frequently asked questions
How do you enable Stem separation (Track Separation) in Rekordbox?
In Preferences > Analysis > Track Separation (Stems), enable the function to activate Vocal, Drums and Instrumental isolation controls on Performance Mode decks.
Why does the recording button (Master REC) not activate or record sound?
If you use an external mixer or controller in External Mixer mode, Rekordbox does not receive the Master channel unless you configure a USB return channel (Rec Out) in the mixer's driver settings.
Which DVS mode should I choose: ABSOLUTE, RELATIVE or INTERNAL?
ABSOLUTE links needle position to the exact file position and restricts digital functions such as Hot Cue; RELATIVE transfers only direction, tempo and scratching, ideal for playing with active cues; INTERNAL returns control to the software and enables all deck functions.
