Rekordbox: Memory Cues, Hot Cues, Active Loops and Preparation Templates

Advanced marking strategy in Rekordbox: Memory Cue versus Hot Cue, Active Loops, quantisation and a professional colour code.

Rekordbox: Memory Cues, Hot Cues, Active Loops and Preparation Templates

Structured marking of Cue points and Loops in Rekordbox transforms decision speed in the booth. Understanding the technical difference between Memory Cue and Hot Cue subsystems is essential to optimise interaction with CDJ/XDJ players.

1. Technical Architecture: Memory Cues vs. Hot Cues

ParameterMemory CueHot Cue
Behaviour when pressedStops the track and positions the player in pause (CUE ready)Starts playback instantly (Trigger)
Navigation on CDJ hardwareNavigated with CUE CALL buttons (arrows)Triggered directly with dedicated pads / buttons (A-H)
Maximum countUp to 10 points per trackUp to 16 (Banks A-H and I-P)
Legacy compatibilityCompatible with older Pioneer players (CDJ-1000/800/200)Requires CDJ-2000 / XDJ or above
Comment / NoteSupports descriptive text visible on the CDJ screenSupports descriptive text and assignable colour

2. Active Loops and Saved Loops: Protection Against Dropouts

An Active Loop is a previously saved loop that activates automatically when the playhead reaches its entry point, Loop In.

How to Configure a Protective Active Loop:

  1. Create a 4- or 8-bar loop in the song’s outro, where the rhythmic backing becomes minimal.
  2. Save the loop by clicking Memory Cue / Saved Loop.
  3. In Rekordbox’s side Cue panel, click the loop icon to the left of the time until it turns Red / Orange with a padlock.
  4. Result on CDJ: If you lose focus during the mix and the song reaches the Outro, the player will not reach silence; it enters a perfect infinite loop, giving you unlimited time to complete the transition.

3. Standard Colour Code for Hot Cues

Establishing a consistent colour standard throughout your library speeds up muscle memory during live performance:

  • 🟢 Green: First Downbeat / Mix In (Recommended start for overlapping the track).
  • 🟡 Yellow: Vocal Entry (Beginning of a verse or important vocal phrase).
  • 🔴 Red: The Drop (Main impact / Section with the greatest bass load).
  • 🟠 Orange: Breakdown / Solo (Harmonic pause without percussive elements).
  • 🔵 Blue: Mix Out (Optimal point to begin exiting the previous song).
  • 🟣 Purple: Active Loop / FX Trigger (Active loop or point for applying Beat Jump repetitions).

4. Systematic Track Preparation Template (Working Template)

To prepare your tracks professionally before USB export:

[ Beat 1 / Intro ] --------> [ Vocals / Phrase 1 ] --------> [ THE DROP ] --------> [ Outro / Active Loop ]
 (Hot Cue A - Green) (Hot Cue B - Yellow ) (Hot Cue C - Red ) (Hot Cue D / Loop - Orange )
  1. Point 1 (Bar 1, Beat 1): Backup Memory Cue + Hot Cue A (Green) on the first kick.
  2. Point 2 (Verse / Vocal In): Hot Cue B (Yellow) 16 or 32 bars before the Drop.
  3. Point 3 (Drop): Hot Cue C (Red) for instant jumps or quick cuts.
  4. Point 4 (Mix Out / Active Loop): Hot Cue D + Active Loop (Orange/Red) 32 bars before the end.

5. Quantisation (Quantize) and Grid Snap

To prevent misalignment when triggering Hot Cues live:

  • Enable Quantize (Q) in Rekordbox’s interface and on the CDJ player.
  • Set quantisation to 1/8 Beat or 1 Beat.
  • When a pad is pressed slightly off time, Rekordbox automatically aligns the trigger to the exact beat or sub-beat determined by the adjusted grid.

Frequently asked questions

How do you enable an Active Loop so it engages automatically on CDJs?

Create a Saved Loop in Rekordbox and click its indicator bar until the loop icon turns red/orange. When the track plays on a CDJ/XDJ, it automatically enters an infinite loop on reaching that point.

How many Hot Cues does Rekordbox support compared with CDJ players?

Rekordbox supports up to 16 Hot Cues (banks A-H and I-P). Modern CDJ players (CDJ-3000) support 8 direct physical buttons (A-H), while earlier models (CDJ-2000NXS2) read 8 distributed across 2 banks of 4.
