Rekordbox Cloud Library Sync: Cloud Synchronisation and Backups
How Rekordbox Cloud Library Sync works with Dropbox and Google Drive: synchronised elements, database backups and preventing risks.
Rekordbox Cloud Library Sync: Cloud Synchronisation and Backups
Rekordbox Cloud Library Sync brings together music collections, metadata and playlists across multiple computers—a performance laptop and studio PC—and mobile devices, iOS / Android, through cloud storage services such as Dropbox and Google Drive.
1. Cloud Library Sync Architecture: Synchronised Elements
The system divides collection data into two separate packages:
[ Rekordbox library ] ---> [ Metadata (Cues, Playlists, Grids) ] ---> Server Rekordbox Cloud Sync
---> [ Audio files (WAV, MP3, FLAC) ] ---> Server Dropbox / Google Drive
- Rekordbox Metadata Server:
- Synchronises playlist structure, Hot Cues, Memory Cues, adjusted Beatgrids, comments and My Tag labels.
- Uses a few megabytes and transfers transparently when the application opens or closes.
- File Server (Dropbox / Google Drive):
- Synchronises the physical audio files.
- Requires storage capacity equal to your entire library’s size with the selected cloud provider.
2. Step-by-Step Synchronisation Setup
- Open
Preferences > Cloud (Cloud). - Link your Rekordbox Account and authorise the connection to your Dropbox or Google Drive account.
- Enable Sync library with another device.
- Audio download options:
- Auto-download: Automatically downloads audio files newly added on another device to the local drive.
- On-demand: Keeps the file visible in the library with a cloud icon; the file downloads only when loaded into a deck or exported to USB.
3. Local and Emergency Backup Strategy (3-2-1 Rule)
Even with Cloud Library Sync, never depend exclusively on the cloud as your only backup. Apply the digital resilience standard:
- 3 Copies: Active computer collection + External backup drive 1 + External backup drive 2 (or Cloud).
- 2 Different Media: Internal NVMe SSD + External mechanical drive or NAS.
- 1 Offsite Copy: A copy stored in the cloud or another physical location.
Manual Backup Export in Rekordbox:
- Go to
File > Library > Back up Library. - Select Music files only or Complete library with music files.
- Rekordbox creates a compressed
.zippackage with themaster.db/data.edbdatabase and all analysis data. Save it on an external drive disconnected from the Internet.
4. Common Risks and Errors in Cloud Environments
- Duplicate files or synchronisation conflicts: These occur if Beatgrids or playlists are modified simultaneously on two computers without closing the previous session to allow a complete metadata upload.
- Broken file paths (Missing Files): If the cloud folder uses different user paths on Windows (
C:\Users\Nombre...) and macOS (/Users/Nombre...), make sure Rekordbox’s Auto-Relocate option remains enabled. - No Internet connection at the venue: In On-demand mode, tracks not previously downloaded to the internal drive cannot be played during the performance if the venue has no Wi-Fi/4G coverage.
5. Cloud Library Sync Limitations
What the cloud does not do matters as much as what it does. These are the documented limitations:
- Plan-dependent scope: Free and Core synchronisation is limited to the Trial playlist - Cloud Library Sync trial playlist, 20 tracks; Creative, Professional or Cloud Option synchronises the complete collection. Free and Core also allow a maximum of 1,000 music files in Cloud Export.
- Individual use, not sharing: All devices must use the same AlphaTheta account; the same library cannot be used by several people.
- Data that never travels: Performance history (History), Hot Cue Bank, Tag List, Matching, Sampler List and Related Tracks are excluded from synchronisation and must be rebuilt on each computer.
- Cloud Export playlists do not update automatically: After editing the original playlist, press SYNC again to refresh the cloud copy.
- One upload destination: There is a single Default Cloud Storage; you can download from Dropbox and Google Drive, but upload only to the default provider.
- Duplicates: Importing the same file on two computers creates two tracks; separate them using the Cloud-column filter.
- Synchronisation overhead: With a large pending volume, Rekordbox responds slowly. You can pause synchronisation from the system tray or macOS menu icon, but changes made while paused are not transmitted until it resumes.
- Capacity and connection: Uploads cannot exceed the subscribed Dropbox or Google Drive plan’s quota; without Internet, there is no new metadata or on-demand downloading.
None of these limitations affects USB export: it remains the recommended live-performance route, with the local copy and external backup described in DJ Library Backups.

Frequently asked questions
Is a paid Dropbox subscription required to use Cloud Library Sync?
Rekordbox requires a linked Dropbox account to synchronise complete audio files. Creative and Professional plans include storage or Google Drive integration.
Can metadata such as Cues and Playlists be synchronised without uploading large MP3/WAV files to the cloud?
Yes. You can enable metadata-only synchronisation (Cloud Option > Sync Metadata), updating Hot Cues and playlists between your computers in seconds with minimal data usage.
Which data does Cloud Library Sync not synchronise?
Performance history, Hot Cue Bank, Tag List, Matching, Sampler List and Related Tracks do not transfer; playlists added to Cloud Export also do not update themselves and must be resynchronised with the SYNC button after editing.
