What the Master Deck is and how it is chosen

The master deck is the tempo and phase reference for the others. How to designate it, when it changes automatically and what handing over control means.

What the Master Deck is and how it is chosen

Quick answer. The Master Deck (or Tempo Master) is the reference for the others: enabling Sync aligns them to its tempo and beat position. It is neither an effect nor a sound setting; it designates control.

Rekordbox calls it sync master, marked with [MASTER]. Traktor calls it Tempo Master, alongside Master Clock, coordinating tempo and beat across decks, loops and effects.

Everything synced inherits the master's strengths and weaknesses. A bad grid distributes the error throughout the booth.

What exactly is the Master Deck?

A master deck supplies a reference. Rekordbox documentation defines BEAT SYNC as automatically synchronising the playing track’s BPM and beat positions with the track playing on the sync master. The master therefore supplies two things: tempo and phase.

Traktor uses another structure with the same logic: its manual states there is always a master tempo source, the Tempo Master, to which other decks, effects and loops can sync. Master Clock adds a central component coordinating tempo and beat synchronisation across decks, loops, tempo-based effects and external applications through MIDI Clock.

Two ideas follow:

  • The master does not process audio. Designation does not change the track’s sound; it tells other decks where to look. Functions such as Master Tempo or Key Lock affect audio.
  • The master is a state, not a preference. It need not be your favourite or loudest deck; it is the software’s reference at that moment.

Choosing the master deck

Rekordbox’s documented procedure is unambiguous: press [MASTER] in the desired deck’s track-information panel. Pressing another deck’s [MASTER] transfers sync-master status to it.

The complete BEAT SYNC procedure is:

  1. Press [MASTER] in the reference deck’s track-information panel.
  2. Start playback on the deck to synchronise.
  3. Press [BEAT SYNC] in that deck’s track-information panel.
  4. Press [BEAT SYNC] again to cancel.

A documented prerequisite explains half of Sync problems: analyse music files to obtain beatgrid information before using beat sync. No analysis means no grid, and no reference for Sync.

A frequently overlooked detail: in EXPORT with two players, the first player to start becomes Sync Master. A deck can therefore become master without deliberate selection.

Booth heuristic—not a law: usually designate the already playing deck to which the others should conform. Changing master mid-mix moves every synced deck’s reference simultaneously. Manuals do not prohibit it; this is a practical recommendation whose consequences are audible live.

The names in each programme

Understand the terminology map before proceeding. Tutorials mixing products lead you to search for a button absent from your programme.

A verified terminology clarification: “Tempo Sync” does not appear in the rekordbox 7.2.18 manual. Its tempo-only mode is BPM SYNC; TempoSync is Traktor Pro 4’s official name. Instructions to activate Tempo Sync in rekordbox use a name absent from that programme.

How it changes decks automatically

Master status is not static: software transfers it in specific situations.

Rekordbox documents transfer to the other deck when you change or unload the sync-master track. In Traktor, the synced deck automatically becomes Tempo Master when the current master track ends or stops manually.

Traktor’s Auto Master Mode options also determine eligibility without intervention—for example, whether Remix Decks can become Tempo Master or only on-air decks qualify. Rekordbox has a special Ableton Link case: while Link operates,[BEAT SYNC] in track information and [MASTER] on the sampler become [LINK], because reference shifts from a deck to the session.

The practical consequence is uncomfortable but useful: control can move without your intervention. If a synced deck behaves strangely after loading/unloading a track, check the current master first.

  1. Track A 8
Deck B
  1. Track B (synced) 16

Master status is not fixed: when its track ends or unloads, the synced deck becomes the new reference. The horizontal axis shows shared bars (4/4); vertical lines mark every 4 bars. If section changes do not fall on the same guides, tracks can match in tempo while their structures clash.

What handing over tempo control means

Traktor’s manual is explicit: a deck synced to a Tempo Master cannot have its tempo adjusted manually; only the Tempo Master changes it. An unresponsive follower pitch control is not broken: it is synced, and taking control requires changing master.

Rekordbox’s SYNC RATE doubles or halves synced BPM relative to the sync master, or retains the original rate. It changes in order [x 1] → [x 2] → [x 1/2]; if doubling exceeds +100%,[x 2] is skipped.

A nuance depends on Sync mode and leads to the next guide:

  • BeatSync (Traktor) maintains tempo and phase relative to master deck or Master Clock.
  • TempoSync locks only tempo: scratch or beat-jump operations may shift phase.

Rekordbox calls its modes BEAT SYNC and BPM SYNC. For precision, the rekordbox manual does not state that contrast as explicitly: the “tempo and phase” versus “tempo only” wording is Traktor’s. What is verified for rekordbox is both modes’ existence and names, and BEAT SYNC behaviour.

Common mistakes

“The master is my favourite deck.” No. It is the designated reference. You can change it, but others depend on it while designated.

“It does not matter which deck is master.” It does: tempo and phase rely on that deck’s grid. A bad master grid contaminates everything synced to it.

“I will correct the synced deck’s tempo.” Traktor documents that you cannot; change it from the master. Repeated follower-pitch adjustments waste live time.

“I always choose the master.” It can change when loading/unloading the master track, when it ends/stops, and in two-player EXPORT when the other player begins.

“Changing master has no consequences.” Every synced deck’s reference changes together. This is not neutral and can be the most noticeable mid-mix action at the wrong time.

“With Sync, I no longer need to know the master.” The opposite: Sync is precisely what makes it important. Without knowing who controls tempo, you cannot understand an unresponsive deck.

If the master controls the others but has a bad grid, the next guide develops the case: What Happens When the Master Deck Has a Bad Beatgrid.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Master Deck in DJ software?

The deck designated as the Sync reference: others align to its tempo and beat position. Rekordbox calls it sync master; Traktor calls it Tempo Master.

Does Master Deck affect the sound?

No. Master designation does not process audio; it chooses the reference for other decks. Master Tempo or Key Lock does affect audio.

How do I choose the master in rekordbox?

Press [MASTER] in the track-information panel of the desired sync-master deck. Pressing [MASTER] on another transfers master status to that deck.

Can the master change without my decision?

Yes. Rekordbox changes it when you change or unload the sync-master track; in a two-player EXPORT setup, the first player to start becomes Sync Master. In Traktor, a synced deck becomes master when the Tempo Master track ends or stops.

Can I adjust a synced deck's tempo?

Traktor documents that you cannot: a deck synced to a Tempo Master gets tempo changes only from the master. Change master to take control.

How do BeatSync and TempoSync differ for the master?

BeatSync keeps tempo and phase aligned to master or Master Clock; TempoSync locks only tempo, allowing phase to drift. These are Traktor names; rekordbox uses BEAT SYNC and BPM SYNC.

Does SYNC RATE relate to the master deck?

Rekordbox's SYNC RATE sets synced BPM to original, double or half the sync-master BPM in order x1, x2, x1/2.
